Spinal Muscular Atrophy “SMA” was discovered in the 1970s by German scientist Johann Hoffman and Austrian scientist Guido Werdanig.

It causes muscle weakness in babies, mostly passed down in families. SMA is seen more in men with a ratio of 2:1.

making it harder for affected women to voice their challenges.

GIRLHAUS was born from the sincere efforts of StolenWheels, known fondly as Bella Rosa. Its primary aim is to highlight striking photographs and poignant stories from women living with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). This collection is set to debut at Augsburg University from April 3rd to May 9th 2024, inviting audiences to experience these empowering narratives.

Over time, this project organically evolved into an impactful and empowering movement, resonating with individuals far and wide. With other women designers, writers, and creative influencers who have SMA, we aim to grow our community and support upcoming generations. We want to be a collective of disabled creatives using our abilities to strive for a world without ableism.

Like the renowned BAUHAUS school established in Germany in 1919, which integrated craftsmanship and fine arts to harmonize individual artistic expression with a focus on practicality, GIRLHAUS echoes this ethos.

Our community comprises talented artists and designers united in the mission to craft a beautifully functional environment that caters to individuals with disabilities, embodying the spirit of inclusive and innovative design with an emphasis on designed storytelling. Drawing inspiration from BAUHAUS, GIRLHAUS strives to create spaces that not only inspire creativity but also prioritize accessibility and thoughtful design for all.
